Can You Hear My Voice is the first piece of opera in a series about voice loss and identity. For the best experience, watch ‘The making of’ followed by the performance film.
Can You Hear My Voice originated from a poem written by Sara Bowden-Evans. Sara was diagnosed with throat cancer and traumatically was unable to speak for two years during her treatment and laryngectomy surgery. She now performs sections of her poem in this first musical setting by composer Hannah Conway, alongside soprano Gweneth Ann-Rand.
Gweneth Ann-Rand had serious throat surgery and medical intervention after a large tumour was discovered in her neck. She lends an intimate and deep personal understanding to the piece and formed a special bond with Sara during the studio recording.
