Professor Martin Birchall leads a ground breaking biomedical research team at UCL who are pioneering an implantable larynx. This soft robotic device aims to give people back their vocal function with safe swallow following laryngectomy surgery. Although his team are experts in voice restoration they had never explored their own personal relationship to voice, identity or what discovered how patients with actual loss of voice perceive their change in self. This piece is crafted from hours of interviews and dialogue with the Robovox team, using verbatim text and audio documentation. It is performed by a chamber ensemble of renowned operatic soloists. It includes the use of an Electrospit; experimental technology which enables the Robovox team to experience loss of direct voice control.
